For the past 24 years, Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) has been highlighting the importance of working together to address and prevent sexual assault, abuse, and harassment during the month of April.
Vincent Strategies is pleased to work with Ujima, The National Center on Violence Against Women in the Black Community, which addresses these pervasive issues within the Black community. The statistics are sobering:
- Intimate partner violence is the leading cause of death for Black women between the ages of 18-34.
- Black women are 35% more likely to experience sexual violence than White women.
- Black women are less likely to report sexual violence than other women. Only about 1 in 15 Black women report sexual violence compared to 1 in 5 women overall.
Ujima champions the empowerment and resilience of Black women and girls and works to heal communities by engaging those in the communities. The organization serves as an important resource for survivors and those who care about survivors and provides in-depth technical assistance to provide resources, tools and support to domestic violence coalitions, networks and programs as well as local, state, and federal agencies.
With an act of sexual violence occurring every 68 seconds in America, we applaud Ujima and other organizations like the National Organization of Sisters of Color Ending Sexual Assault and the National Sexual Violence Resource Center for working to raise awareness and help prevent sexual violence and harassment year round.
To help raise awareness in the month of April, here are a few ways to help:
