President Jimmy Carter ’s Enduring Legacy: Advancing Civil Rights through Court Appointments

President Carter shaking hands with Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Judge Mary Johnson Lowe

Our country lauds President Carter for his remarkable faith-based servant leadership and steadfast human and civil rights commitment. President Carter appointed more women and minority federal judges than all 38 presidents before him combined.

The photos show that he appointed Ruth Bader Ginsburg and my mentor, Mary Johnson Lowe. Judge Lowe was a family friend who took me under her wing when I was in high school. After church one Sunday, she interviewed me for an hour and then wrote a letter of recommendation for admission to the City College of New York Honors College, my father’s alma mater. I often reflect on her generosity and continue to use Judge Lowe as an inspiration as I pay it forward.

Thank you, President Carter! ❤️
